History, Background and Context

The old road of Gracia was the main route to get from the small town of Gracia (independent until 1897) to the city of Barcelona. When the old city walls were demolished, the new urban master plan designed by Ildefons Cerda made the street one of the main axis of development.

Between 1900 and 1914 Passeig de Gracia consolidated as the leading bourgeois residential street, with the creative input of the modernist architects: Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluis Domenech i Montaner, Enric Sagnier, etc. These architects created some of the fantastic buildings in the street. In 1906 the architect Pere Falqués i Urpí designed the famous street lights as well as the benches where they are based.
